Clinical Measurement Program (CMP)

The Clinical Measurement Program (CMP) team is comprised of highly trained audiologists and speech-language pathologists with extensive experience supporting research projects.

Enhanced Measurement Quality

All CMP staff are nationally certified clinicians with years of experience in administers clinical measures in both clinical and research settings. The team provides services expertise and services to ensure clinical measures used in research protocols are implemented with high levels of fidelity, to provide the most accurate data possible. The CMP can support measurements in speech, language, cognition, hearing and vision.

Clinical measure services include:

  • Consulting with PIs on selection
  • Use of data analysis pertaining
  • Administration and interpretation
  • And training and lab staff support

Previous CMP support has included:

  • Administering over 30 different assessment measures, ranging from language samples and vision screenings to standardized tests of speech, language and cognition
  • Conducted assessments with over 700 participants spanning from preschoolers to adults

Working with children and adults who are typically developing, those with hearing loss, developmental language disorder, and Down syndrome.

Support for Protocol Development and Interpretation of Data

PIs are often faced with a need to measure clinical domains outside their direct area of expertise. In these situations, PIs may have limited practical experience with currently available clinical measures. The CMP staff are available in these situations to support PIs in selecting clinical measures that are well suited to answer the PIs question of interest, with an emphasis on choosing measures with strong psychometric properties. Similarly, the CMP staff can support PIs during data analysis with interpretation of results from individual clinical measures.

Quality Assurance Procedures for Measurement Completed by CMP Staff

The CMP team provides the highest quality data by completing the following in administering assessments:

  • Regularly using fidelity checklists developed by the team to monitor and provide feedback on implementation of clinical measures during participant visits.
  • All tests are scored by two team members for consensus on scoring and decision making on scoring discrepancies.
  • All clinical assessment scores from measures completed by the CMP team are double entered into databases to reduce potential for data entry errors.

Support for Labs Conducting Clinical Measures

The CMP team provides support for labs administering their own clinical measures by:

  • Ensuring lab staff use the highest standards in administering and scoring the measures.
  • Providing general training for lab staff to conduct participant visits with a specific population, specific clinical measure, or set of clinical measures.
  • Providing interactive training by practicing assessments.
  • Providing additional pilot participants for lab staff to practice fidelity checklists.

Efficiency of Data Collection and Data Sharing

Increasing the efficiency of data collection and data sharing led to the creation of the CMP database:

  • Scores assessments for a project are entered into a REDCap form for security and accessibility on project protocol.
  • With IRB approval, the data are transferred to the CMP Database where they are available for secondary analysis.
  • With IRB approval, the data are transferred to the recruitment registry maintained by the Recruitment Program.
