Meet the Scientist: Kristen Janky, Au.D., Ph.D.

Join Boys Town National Research Hospital Research Champions Network for the fourth Meet The Scientist talk, a series of presentations featuring Boys Town Researchers addressing issues of concern for clinicians. Kristen Janky, Au.D., Ph.D., will present "The Effects of Vestibular Dysfunction in Children with Cochlear Implants."

Children with hearing loss are at risk of having vestibular dysfunction. This risk increases as the degree of hearing loss increases. It has been estimated that 50% of children with cochlear implants have some degree of vestibular dysfunction. Despite this association, pediatric vestibular testing is not completed routinely in clinical practice. This may be in part because the spectrum of consequences associated with pediatric vestibular dysfunction has not been fully defined.

The purpose of this presentation is to discuss:

  1. The functional effects of vestibular loss in children with cochlear implants, which ultimately drives the need for pediatric vestibular testing
  2. How to identify which children with cochlear implants are at risk for vestibular dysfunction
  3. Which tests of vestibular function are appropriate for children based on their age
