Functional Hearing In Complex Auditory Environments

The purpose of this study is to investigate how children with normal hearing and those with bilateral cochlear implants locate sounds and understand speech in everyday indoor environments.

Who can participate?

  • Children and adults with normal hearing
  • Children and adults who are bilateral cochlear implant users
  • Ages 6-29 years old

Additional Requirements:

  • Fluent in English-speaking (not necessarily native English speaking)
  • Normal-hearing participants: Typically developing with no diagnosed developmental disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, or Down Syndrome
  • Cochlear implant users: No diagnosed developmental disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, or Down Syndrome. Users of the Advanced Bionics, Cochlear, or MED-El brands.

What will participants do?

Participants may be invited to one or several visits of 2-2.5 hours each. Some tasks include:

(1) Hearing Screen: A quick screen of hearing and middle ear functions to verify normal hearing.

(2) Psychoacoustics: Participants may be asked to listen to sounds and judge their spatial locations or to words and sentences and repeat them back.

Compensation

$20 for the first hour, $5 per 15 minutes after the first hour
