Understanding Cerebral Palsy: A Mobility and Brain Imaging Study

Mobility is a human right that is often taken for granted but a valuable resource for people with disabilities. Typically, people focus on physical therapy and strength training to improve gait but often overlook how important the brain is to this process. The PoWER Lab Research Team at Boys Town National Research Hospital uses innovative technology to observe how the brain and body works together while walking. The information gathered can help tailor physical therapy to increase not only physical movement and strength, but also brain functionality to improve mobility.

Who can participate?

Eligible participants are:

  • Between the ages of 13 and 18 years old
  • Diagnosed with cerebral palsy or early brain injury by a medical care provider
  • Able to walk with or without assistance
  • Fluent in English

What will participants do?

Participants will complete 4 in-person visits that can either be completed in one day or across multiple days.

Participants will:

  • Complete clinical assessments with a licensed physical therapist
  • Undergo an EEG scan while walking
  • Undergo a non-invasive MEG scan and MRI scan

Where will the study take place?

Institute for Human Neuroscience

14090 Mother Teresa Ln

Boys Town, NE 68010

Compensation

Research participants will receive up to $200 for their participation. Travel expenses (flight, hotel, mileage, and meals) will be compensated. Participants will also receive a free group pass to Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I receive a diagnosis for cerebral palsy or early brain injury as part of this research study?

No, research participants will not receive a diagnosis by participating in the study.

Will I receive any information or results as part of this research study?

Participants that complete the MRI scan can be given their results of that scan if requested and have that information shared with their care provider(s). Other information collected during the study is not intended for clinical use and therefore not typically shared with participants.

Will I be asked to take any medications or undergo any experimental treatments as part of this resea

No, this study does not involve any type of medical or therapeutic interventions. Additionally, the brain scans completed at the Institute for Human Neuroscience – MEG and MRI – are noninvasive and do not involve the use of contrast agents or radiation exposure.

Do I have to have an official diagnosis to participate?

Qualified participants with cerebral palsy or an early brain injury must have an official diagnosis from a healthcare provider.  However, cerebral palsy is an umbrella diagnosis term and participants who do not have an official cerebral palsy diagnosis will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Do you provide travel accommodations?

Uber Health rides travel reimbursement or mileage reimbursement may be available for individuals within a 60-mile radius of Omaha. Mileage reimbursement, hotel accommodations, flights, and meals may be available for individuals traveling over 60 miles.

Can a friend or family member accompany me on the research visits?

Yes, a friend or family member is welcome to attend research visits. In some cases, it may be necessary to have a friend or family member present to assist with certain aspects of the study.
